מעטים יודעים כי לצמחי המתנה דמויי הפלסטיק ממשפחת הברומליים הנפוצים מאוד במשתלות יש כמה קרובים צנועים עמידים ליובש ולקור, שניתן לגדלם בחוץ אפילו באיזור ירושלים.
אכמאה מאוחה היא אחת מאלה. מוצאה בדרום ברזיל שם היא גדלה בטבע כאפיפיט על ענפי עצים המשמשים לה אמצעי להגיע אל אור השמש החסר כל כך ביער הסבוך. בטבע אוגרות בתוכן שושנות העלים הבהירות מי גשם ושאריות עלים כמקור להשקיה ולהזנה. בגינה נדאג להשקותן מלמעלה ונדשנן מדי פעם. מסביב לשושנה המרכזית צצות שושנות נוספות והצמח גדל בנפחו עם השנים במהירות יחסית ויוצר עציץ מלא, מרשים ומרובה פריחות.
והפריחות? – מברשות מיוחדות הנושאות למשך כחודשיים בחורף פרחים הנראים כגפרורים ורודים-סגולים יפים, שהופכים לעתים לפירות קטנים וצבעוניים.
אכמאה מאוחה מעדיפה לגדול בעציץ במצע עשיר בחומר אורגני מאוורר היטב ובצל חלקי עד מלא בתנאי ארצנו. היא אוהבת מים, אך מפתיעה בעמידותה ליובש ושורדת בפינות מוגנות גם ב 2- עד 3- מעלות צלזיוס. ניתן גם לגדלה בבית בקלות יחסית ומומלץ לחלקה אחת לכמה שנים. ההרפתקנים שביניכם מוזמנים לנסות לקשור צמח כזה עם מעט כבול או סיבי קוקוס אל ענף של עץ בגינה ולנסות לגדלו כמו בטבע. כדאי למקמו בפינה מוגנת מרוח ולהשקות פעמיים עד שלוש בשבוע, יותר מאשר בעציץ.

אכמאה פימנטה-ולוזו בעלת עלים קשים ותפרחתה דמויית האיצטרובל בגווני כתום וקרם שקועה בלב שושנת העלים. קצב הגידול שלה איטי יותר משל האכמאה המאוחה ולכן ניתן להשאירה באותו העציץ למשך שנים רבות. נראה גם כי תוכל לעמוד בכמה שעות שמש ביום ואז יאדימו העלים.

Few of us know that the plastic-like common bromeliads so abundant in garden centres nowadays have several modest, cold and drought tolerant relatives, which are hardy even in our Jerusalem gardens.
Aechmea gamosepala (Matcיstick Bromeliad) is one of those mentioned. Coming from Brazil, it grows naturally on trees thus reaching the sunlight which is so scarce under the lush canopy.
The light green leaf rosettes hold water in their centres and that is in fact how the plant should be watered. New offsets grow around the main rosette forming an impressive full clamp in a short period of time.
And the flowers? - Long inflorescences with pink bracts and light blue-purple flowers that resemble colourful matches appear throughout our winter. They are sometimes followed by pink and black berries.
Aechmea gamosepala prefers a potting mix rich in organic matter and should preferably be protected from strong direct sunlight. It likes water and humidity but is very drought tolerant and can withstand temperatures as low as -2 to -3 degrees celsius. One can even try and attach it to a tree branch with some coconut fibre or fibrous peat and grow it naturally as an epiphyte in a protected corner. It is also a good house plant and we recommend to divide it every few years.
Aechmea pimenti-velosoi is quite similar in growth but has tough leaves with tiny thorns along their edges. The flower spikes in orange and cream hues remain low inside the leaf rosette. It grows much more slowly and can remain in the same pot for many years. It seems a bit more tolerant of direct sunlight with the leaf tips turning a shade of red.
