בשנים האחרונות נפוצו בארץ זנים חדשים רבים של חמציצים דרום אפריקניים הגדלים מפקעות ופורחים בשלל צבעים בסתיו, בחורף ובאביב.לחלק מן הזנים הללו גם עלים צבעוניים, אך כולם נמוכים וקומפקטיים. החמציץ שנציע לכם השבוע שונה מהם בכך שהוא קיים בגינון כבר שנים רבות ובעיקר בגודלו - זהו צמח בעל עלים גדולים ויפהפיים בצבע ירוק בהיר ופרחים ורודים גדולים וגבוהים יחסית. צמח זה נראה למרחוק ויכול למלא במהירות עציץ גדול. אם נתחיל להשקותו בסוף יולי יפרח באוגוסט ופריחה זו יכולה להימשך מספר חודשים באיזור ירושלים ולעתים לחזור באביב. באיזורי הארץ החמים יותר תיתכן גם פריחה חורפית. גם באין פריחה יוצרים העלים הגדולים מרבד יפהפה מן הסתיו ועד לאביב. בתנאי ניקוז טוב יכולות הפקעות הרדומות לעמוד בקלות גם בהשקיה קיצית וכך ניתן להוסיפן כמעט לכל עציץ ליצירת מראה רענן בחורף.
מרהיב במיכל, במסלעה ולכיסוי שטח מתחת לשיחים נשירים בשמש או בשמש חלקית ומאריך ימים מאוד.

Every plant lover has probably noticed the many cultivars of flowering Oxalis (Wood Sorrel) that appeared in our nurseries during the last ten years. All of them are low compact plants that carry colourful flowers, and some even have interestingly painted leaves.
The plant we are offering this week is different in its very early flowering season, and its leaf and flower size.
If you start watering the dormant large bulbs in July, you will watch the first flowers emerge by August reaching a height of 30 cm. Flowering continues for a few months, then stops and sometimes resumes in the spring. In warmer climates flowering occasionally continues through winter. Even without the large and tall vivid pink flowers, the bright green trifoliate leaves create a beautiful mound or mat for more than six months.
Oxalis bowiei is very impressive in a large pot or in a rockery, and is excellent as a ground cover under deciduous shrubs like roses, in full or partial sun. With good drainage it stands regular irrigation even when dormant in the summer so it is a welcome addition to almost any pot, easily enlivening the sad winter look.
Oxalis bowiei lives for many years spreading slowly in the garden and we know of some patches that are at least 30 years old.
